About the Store

The Calico Cat Bookshop is located in the heart of Downtown Ventura, at the corner of Main and California Streets.  Ventura City Hall, a historical landmark, looks over the city one block away on Poli Street, and Ventura Pier stretches far out into the Pacific Ocean just three blocks down the road.

The bookstore was established in 1975 as a classic old bookshop, a leaning that is still kept alive.  The name of the store seemed appropriate as a calico cat slept in one of the windows for years.  A sign was on display: "Quiet, daysleeper on premises."

The selection found at the store is eclectic and ever-moving, with books covering a wide range of subjects. There is an extensive cookbook section: French cooking strongly represented, M.F.K. Fisher, the Californian food writer, always.  History has a prominent place, with local and general California history placed side by side with Western Americana next to the counter.

Books on the Civil War, the Revolutionary War and the two World Wars fill up shelves that are popular with the locals, many of whom are linked to the large military bases in the area.  European history, including Greek and Roman, are kept in stock, as well as Mexican and Latin American works.  Asian history is not overlooked.  It often blends with Eastern philosophy, a strong area of interest to many Californians, who look to the East for inspiration.

The Calico Cat Bookshop, resembles a classic European old bookstore, with second-hand and collectable books filling its shelves, all in good condition.  Books on Christianity and most other religions stand close to books by literary authors who have made a difference to children and grown-ups lives alike.  Poetry for young and old, illustrated books to lighten the heart, all find place on the shelves.  The bulk of books are hard bound, but a good number are paperback editions of the classics in most fields.
